A few years ago, both my daughters took classes next to Trader Joe’s. Like clockwork, every week after their classes were done, we would peruse the aisles of the beloved grocery store and pick up things for dinner, as well as various snack-y items to taste test.
Spoiler alert: we discovered a lot of wonderful things.
But in the years since, they have both stopped attending those classes, and our trips to TJ’s are slim to none.
So what’s a gal to do when her favorite sweet and salty snack is no longer readily available? She makes it at home.
Why I love this recipe:
As y’all should know by now, I love snacks that are sweet, salty and crunchy. The combination is impossible for me to stop eating, and these toffee pretzels tick all those boxes.
Before we dive in: no, we are not using store-bought toffee bits to make the pretzels. Yes, we will need to use our stovetop, as well as the oven. This recipe is a little bit more complex than some other pretzels that I’ve got on my website, but I promise it is worth the effort.
A few more things to love include:
- Simple ingredients. If you’re a baker, you probably have everything you need in your pantry already. And if you’re not, they’re simple to pick up at your local grocery.
- They keep. Store them in a sealed bag with the air pushed out, and they’ll last more than a week. This is assuming that you or your family does not gobble them up sooner.
- Best texture ever. There’s something special about the toffee coating the pretzels and giving them extra crunch.
No matter when you make this recipe, you are in for a treat, and I hope you love these pretzels as much as I do.

Let’s talk ingredients!
In addition to the tools above, you’re going to need some ingredients to make this recipe, too! Chances are, you might already have some of them in your fridge or pantry. Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements and instructions.
Here is what you need to get at the store to make this recipe:
- Pretzel twists — use a bag of your favorite crunchy pretzels! I chose the twists, but different shapes should work similarly.
- Unsalted butter — I like to use unsalted butter here to ensure the pretzels don’t get too salty. (After all, the ranch dressing and the pretzels both have salt added.)
- Light brown sugar — I used light brown sugar because that is what I had in my pantry, but you can use dark brown sugar, too. Either will work and give you those deep molasses notes that you will not get from white sugar.
- Pure vanilla extract — this gives vanilla undertones to the toffee and helps bring all the flavors together. Use the best you can afford.
- Kosher salt — a healthy pinch of salt is going to give this sweet recipe some nice balance. I like to use a medium-grain kosher salt in all my recipes. Diamond Crystal is my favorite brand.
DID YOU KNOW?
Let’s talk toffee. Butterscotch and toffee are made with similar ingredients. However, toffee is cooked to a higher temperature, meaning it hardens more than butterscotch does.
That is the key here.

How to make Toffee Pretzels
Prepare. Pour the pretzel twists into a large mixing bowl. Preheat the oven. Line a sheet pan with parchment or a baking mat, and set aside.
Make the toffee. Add the stick of butter to a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Measure in the brown sugar and melt the two of them until the butter has completely melted and the entire mixture is bubbling vigorously for 3-4 minutes.

Next, turn off the heat. Pour in the vanilla extract and the kosher salt.
Be prepared because the mixture will bubble even more aggressively.
Stir or whisk vigorously until the bubbling calms down.

Mix. Pour the hot toffee mixture over the pretzels. Use a rubber spatula to gently toss everything together until coated. Proceed carefully, as this is hot-hot-hot!
Bake. Bake the pretzels for 25-30 minutes total… but you will need to open the oven and gently stir with a heat-safe spoon or spatula every 10 minutes to ensure all parts of the pretzels bake and do not burn.

Keep an eye on them because they can and will burn!
Cool. When the pretzels have baked for the allotted time and no longer appear wet, remove from the oven, and let cool completely. This will take 20-45 minutes, just depending.
Serve and enjoy!

how to store:
Once the pretzels have cooled, transfer them to a gallon-sized plastic bag. Push any extra air out of the bag and seal tightly. They will keep for more than a week if stored properly. You can also do this in an airtight container.

Frequently Asked Questions
You probably can, but I have not tried it. Also, technically, you need brown sugar to make toffee.
Any bagged crunchy pretzels. I used the pretzel twists but I bet the rods or the squares would also work just fine here.
You do and that is part of the instructions. It’s kind of a pain but a necessary evil. If you don’t stir the pretzels every so often as they bake, you run the risk of them burning.
If they’re bitter I bet you overbaked them. The sugar in the toffee sauce can burn, and burnt sugar tastes bitter.
You sure can, but you will need two large rimmed baking sheets to make it happen because you will not be able to fit two batches of this onto one sheet pan. It’s important not to overcrowd the pan, and one bag is pushing the limits of what a regular-sized baking sheet can do.
No, these do not need to be refrigerated. As long as they cool completely before you store them, you can store them in a cool dry place in your kitchen or pantry.

Quick tips and tricks to the best sweet-salty pretzels
- Don’t rush them… or turn up the heat to bake them faster! We don’t want to burn the pretzels (or the sugar coating them!) Don’t forget to give them a stir every 10 minutes.
- Bake them early. Mix ‘em up and bake on a day when you have the time. After all, you’ll need to be close to the oven to give the baking pretzels a stir. Follow the instructions for storing so they’ll keep until you are ready to use them.
- Store them properly. If your storage bag is not properly sealed, they will go stale, and you will be sad. Ask me how I know.
